Pistol or mantis

Who would win a pistol shrimp or a mantis shrimp? If they were the same size ofcourse. Just curious

I couldn't say. It would mostly depend on whether or not the mantis can be stunned by the pistol shrimp. They both use cavitation in their attacks, but a pistols is more concentrated to create shockwaves and stun, while mantises use it to do more physical damage. It could be that a mantis would be more resistant to being stunned because they use cavitation too, but this is all just guesses based very little research into pistol shrimp or the physics involved in cavitation (I basically got underwater implosion that generates alot of force out of what I've read in the past)

Of equal size? I wouold go with who wins most fights, who ever lands the first blow. I have been popped by Pistols and it isn't a plesant feeling but it's nothing like being smacked by a Mantis.

Thurge, My understanding is that pistol shrimp don't use their claw like a physical attack where they just pinch or whack, but as more of a stunner. They make a loud noise or soundwave or something that is meant to stun the enemy/prey while a mantis has a more direct and physical attack. Now if a mantis could get a few hits in with he pistol unaware I would bet on the mantis obviously, but that is not likely because the pistol shrimp live in burrow and rarely leaves them. Unless my understanding of the pistol shrimp attack is wrong? If it is Please tell me....

OK, not that I intensionally fight marine life for fun, but I do work at an lfs and we get both species in with shipments of rock and coral. I have put both together in holding cubes and monitored their behaviour and at first they don't bother each other at all, but as soon as the mantis settles in he takes out the pistol shrimp
for food!! Understand that a pistol shrimps eye sight is very poor and this puts him at a disadvantage against a mantis who has very good eye sight!! The mantis is much quicker than a pistol shrimp at least that is what I have seen!!

Well IMO it depends on 3 main factors.

1. The size of a mantis, as we all know being hit by a small mantis doesnt hurt much, if at all.

2. If the pistol saw the mantis coming.

3. If the mantis lands its blow at the right spot.

So Quite frankly, I believe the pistol would win, from the sheer ability of a mantis needing to "eye" its blow first, and the ranged capabilities of the pistol. As they say its easier to prevent, then deal with the problem when it has already arrived.

I've heard of pistols winning. I think if they were the same size, they both knew it was a contest (haha), and if the pistol saw the mantis, the pistol would probably win. If the pistol had a goby, well, I would bet money on them.

I'd love to take your money!!!

haha. chameloman. I say that because i dont see how the mantis could get near enough with the pistlol blasting at him. And the watchman would just distract the mantis for the half a second it takes to get stunned out of your senses. I read somewhere about where someone had them together and the mantis got hammered. same size too. Actually i think the mantis may have been a little bigger. I think kif they were both big, the mantis would kill the pistol even if he died later, but smaller, i think the pistol would win.

Mantids are still my all time favorite animal though

Like I said I work at an lfs and see it all the time!! Just last night we had a BIG shipment come in and I found two pistols they were
mixed in with a bunch of purple lobsters!! I accidentally put them in with the lobsters they were both the same size and as I am cutting more lobster bags open I hear a "pop, pop" I look down to
my amazement, a purple lobster had a hold of the pistol shrimp with one claw and the pistol was BLASTING the lobster in the face
and it didn't even phase him!!! He took four legs of the pistol as he was being popped!!! I then seperated the pistols and put them in a different tank!!
