I believe the Pistol Shrimp digs holes, builds caves, only to cave in the hole at night to keep out predators, and then starts all over again the next day. They like to have one of the shrimp gobies as a partner to watch the area as they excavate the hole for the both of them. A yellow watchman gobie, or even a Dracula Shrimp Gobie. They have an interesting relationship, so it is worth getting one of the shrimp gobies if you have a pistol shrimp.
Mine does it all the time. They like some larger stuff like sea shells to build "roofs" over them. Mine also has many holes and locations he excavates. Really neat addition.
