Placement and water quality questions

I recently got a Tridacna clam and placed him on a rock ledge about half way up my tank (92g corner with 250w LB pendant). The next day he was on the sand, and had attached himself. I have been watching him and he seems ok. Should I try to put him up higher closer to the lights or leave him be?

Second, when I vacuum my sand I stir up detritus and its is suspended in the water column for a couple hours. I read that this can kill clams, fact or fiction?

Also I am looking for some online info on clam keeping, any good links will be appreciated.

if he's attached, he's probably happy. i would leave him alone and try to limit the amount of detritus you stir up by turning off the pumps in the tank, i'd say fiction for killing clams.

and post a couple pics when you get a chance, please

First, what species of clam do you have? That's going to be essential in determining its lighting requirements. I'm not sure I'd agree that the fact the clam attached is indicative of much of anything. By the way, what did it attach to? From the way you phrased it, it sounds like it attached to the sand. As far as detritus in the water, I wouldn't worry about that unless we're talking about extremely large amounts of detritus.

You shouldn't be vacuuming your sb in the first place IME. Your cleanup crew and sandsifters should be doing that for you.

I have a decent cleanup crew but I found recently that there was a lot of buildup in the sandbed ( +/- 1 inch aragonite). I vacuumed this weekend without kicking to much up, and clam is still happy.

Here a cruddy cell pic of the tridacna derasa

As you can see he the rock is almost at the sand level, hes actually kinda hanging off the end of the rock and got a old snail shell under him in on the sand.

Also at its current size (2-3 inches) should I feed plankton or just plenty o' artificial sunlight?
