I want to build each end of the tank up with live rock leaving the middle open with sand. would it be a problem if I place the live rock up against the glass?

The only problem that I would notice if you got coraline to grow on your tank. It would quickly grow on the tank and you probobly would spend alot time picking it of. If that doesnt bother you no problem
Its been my experience that many reef keepers build up their rock against the glass...I'd be weary of low flow (dead zones) in those areas however...just keep this in mind as far as current goes...also, it will be more difficult to clean off the algae in those areas- hope this helps!
