Plakobranchus ocellatus Slug

Grey Reefer,

I knew nothing about this species until now. Have you found them commercially available? Are they feeding there?

Kevin

Yeah. Mary over at seacrop has some for sale.slug for sale here

I asked her about them already. She told me they do great in tanks as long as you have a sandbed they can bury themsevles in and it is at least six months old. Other than that I was hoping someone else has had experience with them. From the info I found on the web I can't find anything wrong with keeping one or couple.

I don't have any experience with them, but have considered buying one before. The thing that stopped me from getting them is that their diet isn't known. They're obviously herbivores, but most sacoglossans are pretty specific in their diets. If you had the right type of algae for them they would probably do well provided they didn't have predators in the tank and you took precautions to keep them out of powerheads and intakes.

Mine (from Seacrop) wasted away, but the Black Scutus are still fine a year later.
Guess I won't be getting one. Thanks for heads up. Speaking of the Black Scutus I thought about getting one for the my 20g. Alot macro algae came on some of the live rock I purchased. Would the Scutus munch on some of it?

scutus is great - but my P. ocellatus just kept on going over my overflow and into my sump, and I think it just had one too-many trips through the return pump and eventually couldn't take it :(

so, if you do get one, make sure ou have everything covered with a fine mesh

P. ocellatus is an interesting animal. Even though it's a saccoglossan and an algae eater that sequesters chloroplasts from it's food the animal is normally found on sand bottoms away from algae. Another interesting thing is that it's semi-commensal on certain holothuroids and even lays it's eggs on them.

Thanks for the info. I would try to keep one if I had a bigger setup, but for now I'll stick to stuff I know will do well in my tank.
