Plant Requirements?

Hi all,

I would like to put some plants in my tank. But I have no experience at all with plants in aquariums.
What are the requirements for having plants in aquariums?
Do I need any specific equipments?

Thanks guys.

Macro algae is going to be just about the only plant you are going to be able to place in your tank, however, be aware that once macro takes over it becomes very intrusive and will quickly take over the whole tank, later it become very hard to get rid of it.

You can do mangroves, but you should water the leaves every day to get the salt off of them. They also need a lot of light, and I've heard that they absorb a lot of magnesium from your water, so you would have to probably supplement that.

Otherwise, some people on RC have had awesome mangrove tanks to the side of their tanks as a refugium or such. Pretty nifty.

I would go with some green caulerpa. It is kind of difficult to find, but Reef's Edge has some and I have some too. It grows pretty fast, but IMO it is very nice looking. I would be happy to give you enough to get you seeded, just pm me if your interested.

I have some halimeda I will bring to the club meeting tomorrow. It looks pretty cool, kinda like a plant stegasaurus. Grows easy and is not nearly as fast growing/intrusive as cheato mayny caulerpa variants.

I have dicyota macroalgae in my tank, which I regularly prune from my rocks. Let me know if you want some. This one's not really problematic, grows slow, but I'd probably be happier if I didn't have any. None of my tangs eat it either. Julian Sprung says it doesn't taste good to most fish.
