chlorophyll isn't the only pigment capable of photosynthesis.
their are secondary pigments that fill in the gaps in the spectrum, thats how algae compete.
and, on a side note, their are many strains of chlorophyll.
also, it would be wrong to compare symbiodinium zooxanthellae to macro algae, since it is a dinoflagellate, which makes it a member of dinophyta as apossed to chlorophyta, phaeophyta, or rhodophyta.
