I use black sand and my fish and I just love it. I hardly notice anything on my sand since it darkens everythign then my fish take care of it.

I don't seem to have much detritus settling since the only fish in the tank are my clowns. The MP20 keeps things pretty stirred up too.

Mine is natures ocean. Pecto sells sand cheaper than most of my LFS. Just be sure to check the expiration date.

frct very nice tank, i was looking at the black sand from Petsmart, caribsea naturals or something. Since ive heard mixed things, is there any thing different you have to do with the black sand vs regular aragonite...i heard something about ph buffering etc..

I have caribsea black sand also. there are a few different shades of black if i remember correct. I didnt need to do anything different then what I did with the white sand

savage - I'd say just test your alk and ph every night after adding black sand to see if you need to adjust anything. Like always, all tanks are different so what works on one tank won't work on another. I haven't had to adjust my dosing schedule at all since adding the black sand. I had bare bottom before though so I was used to dosing with out the added benefit of a "real" sandbed.

fiftyfiveg - entacmaea quadricolor. Just a regular healthy rose anemone.

Well I decided Togo with black sand and it's stunning. Haha
need to add some lr and cycle a little bit... I think.. If I add live rock from my
Main tank will I need
to cycle? Dt has been set up a few years

this is probably one of the better black sand tank I've seen, most other tanks that use black sand can easily get a very thin layer of yellowish algae or redslime on it defecting the purpose of black sand look. How long did you set it up and do you have to turn over the sandbed often?
