play sand

Years ago I was given 2 bags of "play sand" that somebody purchased at home depot or similar place. I used one bag along with other sands in my reef and the other bag went to my friend (which he also used). It looke like pink fiji sand, very fine. I was wondering if anybody remembers what it was called and where can I buy it. I need to buy at least 100Lbs of sand but at $20-26 for 20LBs at LFS, it seems expensive. I remember the other sand was like either 30 or 50 LBs and the guy told me it was like 5-7 bucks. Please respond.

It was probably called "southdown" play sand. It has basically dissapeared off the face of the earth. They have made it in various different names made by the same company "old castle" i think. I was able to get some a while back but cannot find it anywhere now.

The only thing i have seen recently that is close is called "kolorscape" comes in a clear plastic bag with blue writing. I have seen it in home depot every now and then. I didn't use it because i was skeptical of whether or not it was actually araganite. I did the vinegar test on some and it did not fizz like southdown used to.

Not baing araganite doesn't mean it's no good. Many people use silica based sand with no ill effects. Just do some research and decide if it's worth saving a little money.

I gave up and bought from an LFS. For 100 bucks I figured i wouldn't have to worry about it.

YES, Southdown, thats what it was. Dissapeared??? That's not good.

I want to use araganite because of its buffering capability. I know it works because in 3 years a about a 3rd of my old sand dissapeared (dissolved). Silica based send will not affect water at all but the benefits of using it are not there.

Anybody else???
