Please help!! Lots of death. *long

Have you tried adding probidio? Bio-digest and bioptim? Those two might help you with the bacterias the tank needs :)

Nutrisea water was $11 for 4.5 gallons, yea it was expensive but I was trying to save the fish I had left so I didn't really care about the money...it's only money:lmao:

I usually run tap water that I mix with conditioner and salt. My tap has about 10 of nitrates in it. I've found a place this morning that sells ro/di water that I will probably use from now on. Even though my neighbor has a beautiful
Shark tank using tap water and never had an issue and Ive never had any algae problems in my freshwater tanks that I've kept the past 15 years. I know the volatile topic that tap water is, not looking to get I to that. Lol.

If its just money i'd really recommend you spend the $130 and get a ro/di system. It will save you headaches in the future.

Honestly, an ro/di system could be given to me for free and I wouldn't use it. As someone that fishes in water system resivours I see the devastation of droughts and over water usage....personally I think it's disgusting to waste as much as much as an ro/di system wastes. And I am not a green peace tree hugger type either.

No one is saying that the tap caused the crash. We are all just saying that its cheaper and easier to have RO on hand for when you need to do large changes.

Also, you can redirect the waste water and use it for other things, like watering plants or even set up a reservoir that is hooked up to flush your toilets and the likes if you want.

That is true but it is only a waste if you allow it to be a waste. Personally I use my waste water to wash laundry. I have seen some use it for gardening. And no the tap didn't cause the crash but if you water is really testing 10 nitrates out of the tap it will become an issue down the road.

I hear ya, the if it's only money comment just rubbed me wrong. I'm not wealthy at all but I'm not broke either, I'm not using an ro system based on my enviromental decision, not financial.

I don't use nutrisea water, I just got it this time put into the fuge so I would have healthy water to hold whatever fish I could take out of the tank. It was something I felt would be the best to try and save my fishes. I don't plan on using it in the future.

I did find a place about 20 minutes from me that sells ro water that they make, they have a huge unit that has minimal waste, so I'll take my 10 5gallon containers that I got with the nutrisea and fill them there once a month for water changes and top off.

I've read that some of these ro systems give you 3 gallons of good water out of ten gallons, how do you store that much waste water? I use almost 3 gallons a day in top off, plus water changes, that would be like 250 gallons of waste a month

How many times is your toilet flushed? How much water goes down your sink etc?

So you will buy RODI pre made but not buy one to make it yourself? Sounds weird to me. But it doesn't really matter some use tap in reefs and it works. But as you stated you have already read about that and it's up to you to make the decision.

Sounds like you have a good plan on your course of action to fix the issue so good luck ..

If you are worried about waste you could pick up a Kati Ani (spelling?) system. They make water just as clean as any rodi with no waste, once the resin is exhausted you just regenerate it.

The place I found that sells rodi told me that they have a near zero waste system, the waste is plumbed into this huge water heater looking tank and gets used, not wasted....so I wouldn't be wasting water by buying from them.

I'm not sure how to make use of the waste water, I've seen posts were people have it pour into huge Rubbermaid garbage cans then use that water for plants and laundry but how I'm going to get it from my rodi downstairs to my toilet and laundry room upstairs has me stumped

Sorry about the loss, I am sure the kids were unhappy, you did what you could. Because you shared your experience, it help others in the future who read the forums.

With an RO/DI system you can also run a ATO (Auto Top Off) so your tank water level and salinity remain constant (hands-off). I have my waste water plumed outside to 1. water the trees, 2. animals, 3. wild birds. It is not wasted at all, it is recycled. Also, you can get a tap on the sink to offer RO water for your family to drink and connect it to your refrig for quality ice.

I'm surprised anything lived if both A and N were "off the chart". Get a test kit and you will be able too test all the time. Get the kids involved in this and they will learn a great deal from the activity.

Good luck...

Thanks, I'll look into more rodi options, if the tank were on the same level as my living area it would make things easier...lol

I have a test kit, API I think it is...but noticed its like 2 years past experation, and even now reads zeros across the board...never buy test kits from a lfs going out of business!

The two stores close to me were both out of marine test kits, only had freshwater. They said they get deliveries today and Monday so will have to check back

My ro/di is in the laundry room so I just put the waste water line in washing machine. Simple and easy as long as your not making huge amounts. I usually only make 5 gallons at a time and i have 2 kids and a wife so something always needs to be washed! Bonus points from the wife for starting the laundry.
