Hello All,

I currently have a standard 90g that has been running for 6 months now and I already cant stop thinking of going bigger and better. Its just a standard corner overflow with 2 holes drilled in it.

What I dont like about it is the fact that it was only drilled for 2 holes which means I wasnt able to run a clean looking herbie or bean animal drain while utilizing the overflow section to house it all. I recently converted it to a herbie style using both drilled holes as drains and running braided viynl tubing up and over the back of the tank finished off with loc line fittings. It definately solved the loud drain problem but took away from the asthetic apeal of the tank I think.

Secondly, I am just plain out of room on this tank. The stand is jammed packed and I wish I would have built it much larger than I did.

Finally, I now think I would prefer a deeper (Front to back) tank than a longer one so that I have a much bigger variety of aquascaping i can do.

The two sizes I am thinking would be either a 187g (60x30x24) or a 224g (72x30x24).

I live in Texas so it gets hot in the summers and I am willing to keep my house a little cooler if needed than having to buy a chiller. The only location for the tank I have is in the center of the house and a chiller just wont work for my set up. I hear they are loud and produce a lot of heat and Ill have nowhere to vent that. Im also trying to get the big tank feel without having to take out a second mortgage to afford all of the equipment it will require. Since the tank is in the living room I need it as quiet as possible. Those are my goals and I would really appreciate all of your help in helping me come up with the perfect design that works for me.

Here are some specs and features I am thinking I would want for the tank. Please look them over and give me some feedback on them. My current 90 is the biggest tank Ive ever had so something this size is definately new to me.

Tank Size
60 x 30 x 24
or
72 x 30 x 24

Tank Material
Really only interested in glass

Possible Builders
Reef Savvy
Miracles
Coast to Coast
Lee Mar

Overflow Type
Im thinking of going with an external coast to coast style. I like the idea of nothing being visible inside the tank and keeping the clean look of all solid walls. Plus I hear the surface skimming ability with C2C is awesome.

Plumbing Type
Either Herbie or Bean Animal

Number of Returns
2- each with their own pump

Bracing Type
I dont know if I want eurobracing or maybe rimless if you can get them that big. Im not a fan of the normal plastic bracing I have now.

I would like to eventually design an antomatic water change system on the tank. WIll the drain for those usually get plumbed into a sump or the DT? Any input on a efficient design for this system would be appreciated.

Lighting
I currently have 2 G3 Radions but will probably switch to a T5 setup for this tank due to the high cost of needing to buy more Radion fixtures vs the reward for them. I like the ATI Hybrid fixtures. Probably go with an 8 bulb set up. Ill use the radions on my frag tank build that I will be doing.

Flow
I have 2 MP40s now that I think I can use on the back wall of this tank and maybe add 2 MP60's as well for each side. For the return pump Ill need some suggestions for that. For this big of a tank are submersible pumps pretty much out of the question? I dont mind doing an external but worry about the noise from them. Like I said this is in my living room and I want it as quiet as possible.

Sump
Ill probably use an AIO design that I came up with that will house a dual filter sock area, large skimmer chamber, fuge for Chaeto, Pump return area, ATO water section, 2 part dosing containers. Im hoping to maximize the space need for a sump. I currently have it all seperate and feel that i waste too much precious space with all seperate containers and devices.

Filtration
Im only relying now on my LR, Small amounts of GFO in my Avast Marine Reactor, and Chaeto. I feel that I can keep the same setup in the new tank and use the same equipment as well.

Dosing
Im using a bubble magus dosing pump for my 2 part dosing system but am not really impressed with the accuracy of that pump. I find it doesnt get very close at all to dosing what it says its dosing. Ill use it on my frag tank setup. Im open for suggestions for a new dosing pump. Im thinking either Vertex Libra or even the Pacific Sun Kore 5th doser which looks cool.

Controller
Ill use my full apex system i have now for this set up.

Skimmer
Ill def need to upgrade this and have not been happy with my bubble magus curve 5 anyway. Ill keep it for the frag tank as well. Im thinking of maybe an AquaMaxx EM300 or AM350, a ReefDynamics Skimmer, or LifeReef System. Not sure.

Please list your oppinions on my equipement list and feel free to give me some of your must haves that you cant live without.

I appreciate all of your help and oppinions.

Thanks,

Even without a chiller you're still going to have to consider how to handle the evaporation that is going to come off the tank and sump and vent it outdoors somehow. You should include this when considering where to site the tank in your home. You don't want mold and mildew to become an issue in your living room (or anywhere else in your home, for that matter).

Thats a good point and I forgot to mention something about that. Is there a general volume that once you cross it is when you really need to start being concerned with humidity from evaporation and things like that? I dont really have a problem with it with my 90g but I know im considering going 2-3Xs as much water volume in the house as I have now.

Im kind of a noob to all of that but wouldnt my AC help a lot with controlling all of that? i know my thermostat measures the humidity in the house. At what levels should you start to worry about mold becoming a problem?

I don't know of any general rule. I would be concerned if the humidity was constantly above 55%. I know it's a big concern for people in Florida. Maybe someone living there would care to chime in (?).

Actually, we in Florida are so pro active with humidity control in our houses
(read....efficient AC) that the addition of a tank requires moderate planning at best.My 150 required angling an AC feed (in the ceiling) towards the top of the DT and turning the temp down to 74 at night. The DT 's range was 78-80 over 24 hours..pretty stable.
Reef Savvy is currently building my new glass 525 and Felix has been very good to deal with.

Well it doesn't sound like you are doing that much then for humidity. I will need my AC replaced in the near future and can add a dehumidifier to the central AC syst which I'm sure will be more than enough for this. I just find it hard to beleive that everyone that has a medium to large tank is putting ventilation systems above the tank. I can see if it was in a small enclosed room but not a big living room.

IMO, only you can decide which size tank to go with. I suggest figuring out exactly where you want the tank to go and taping out the dimensions with painters tape to see how it would affect the flow through the room. Then decide how tall a stand you want; do you prefer easy access for maintenance or a taller stand so you don't need to stoop. You're going to be spending a lot of money, having the right sized tank in the right location at the right height is the first step to creating a great system.

Use old cardboard boxes to build the actual size of tank and stand you are proposing. Put it where you want the tank to go. Walk around it. Get used to it. Is this really what/where you want it?

Its going to be going where my current tank is. Its not going to be much deeper but definately longer. Im fine with the placement of the tank. Im also leaning more towards the 225g because after this one I dont see another upgrade happening and I dont want to be left wanting more.

WHat i was really trying to get from this thread is for some big tank owners to chime in with some cool features or additions they made to their tanks that they feel that cant live without or really cool ideas that made their life easier. I only have experience with basic tanks like my corner overflow. I have never even had a coast to coast type or any other. I was wanting some feedback on those set ups or possibly others that you all feel work better. I was wanting to do an external C2C rather than internal to save more room in the tank. Did anyone see any problems with the external one? Does it need to be supported to prevent leaks in the future?

I have no experienc with external pumps so can i get some suggestions for 2 or possibly 1 of them to run my returns. Ones that will stay quiet.

The only reason I really didnt want acyrlic was because i have heard how easily they scratch. But you can save lots of money going that direction vs glass so are my fears of having a tank full of scratches and swirl marks after a few years justified?

How can i avoid the ugly plastic bracing on a big tank like this? Is eurobracing even offered on a tank of this size? Can someone chime in with any feed back on eurobracing or other types that maybe i dont even know about? Are they really that big of a pain to work around?

If i go with the C2C overflow is there a standard size that they should be? I run a herbie drain now and know that you have to have certain depth of water above your full siphon so that is has enough pressure on it to push only water in and not any air in it. I have no experience with a bean animal style. Are they easier to plumb and is there a certain depth to keep in mind when using those?

THings like this i am looking for.

These are all things of personal taste. There is little to no consensus on any of them (if there was we'd all have identical tanks). For every yay there will be a nay, with sundry examples as "proof". Your best bet is to go out and see other people's tanks. Is there a reef aquarium club in your area? Do they do tank tours? Form your opinions based on what you can see compared to what you can glean from questioning the various tank owners.

If I were to do it all over again, I would go with:
Reef Saavy 96x36x30
Royal Exclusiv Dream Box sump
Alpha 250 Skimmer
ATI Hybrid LED Power Module
MP60s
Ghost Overflow
Apex

I am very satisfied with how my current setup is going but if I could do it again that would be the route I go.

We have a 265G display (almost 400G total volume). During the coldest parts of winter when the temperatures hover in the low teens, I have noticed a very little amount of condensation on our windows. At this point, I'll crack a window upstairs for a day or so until the moisture clears up. Other than that, we really don't do anything else regarding humidity control.
Relating to your MP's, we utilize two MP60's and run them around 65% max levels the majority of the time. Those two alone are more than adequate.
