i got this button coral from somebody about 3 weeks ago and it hasn't inflated since it was transported. it looked great in his tank, but now it looks like this...

my water params are nitrate=0 ammonia=0 pH=8.2 nitrite=0 sg=1.023 temp=80 deg F.

what does it mean when it does this, and how might i help it recover? also, am i correct in assuming it is a Cynaria lacrymalis?

thanks in advance!

whats your other tank readings , PO4 , CA , Mg , Alk

and what was the lighting on his tank, and your tank

I hate to say it but he may be a goner. That is some pretty bad recession and his mouth is gaping. Has he eaten at all? I would say you have to get him eating REALLY quick. Try soaking its food in some zoecon or something.

Might want to move it to a low light area and feed it (Cut off the flat end of a clean, empty water bottle, put it over the coral in your tank and then feed through the top. A drop or two of Selcon when you feed might also help). Looks like a cynarina? How large is it? I have "rescued" them in much worse condition and brought them back, but you'll definitely need to do something soon or you'll lose it. GL, Marcye

Did this recession occur during shipping or in the three week period that followed? I would try to find a way to test more parameters of your tank, specifically calcium and alkalinity.

You will want to feed it regularly and try to make sure it is as stable as possible. The base needs to be secure in the rock or substrate to prevent falling, moving, or tissue damage. If it is in the sand, make sure only the skeleton, not the tissue, is touching the sand.

Good luck
