Please Help, Need Input, years of exp help pls

Is the room in which the aquarium is located subjected any to CO2 exchange. i.e. fresh air in and CO2 out? Windows opened for a few minutes each week perhaps. Between the intense lighting, aquarium cover and no fresh air exchange it looks about as you might expect it. I think a new build (sump or no sump) together with owner will be great fun and both will learn something about the other. keep us posted

Awesome that your going to help get everything back on track. I know you said cash was a major concern in this project. I'd check with lfs and clubs to see if anyone has gear that you could pick up. personally I'd just be honest about the situation and see what folks have laying around, like you most reefers have an extra this and that hanging around that they may be willing to sell or give away. Not trying to make this a charity case due to you friends circumstances btw, I've done this personally when ive been in a pinch and have also helped others when they were. There are lfs here that deal in second hand gear and rentals if for example your lights or pump die and you don't have a back up. I'd also check eBay Craigslist etc for second hand, sometimes you get surprised. Understandably most items you'd pick up this way may not be the best of the best, but this could help get some things like a skimmer instead of none, and at least have a decent place to start while saving cash here and there for up grades. Good luck!!! Can't wait to see what you guys come up with!

Possible causes of problems
1. Canister filter
2. crushed coral substrate

Both are detritus traps. If you have cyano, you most likely have a source of phosphates feeding the cyano which may be coming from the filter and substrate.

3. Depending on how old the lights are, they may need to be replaced. 2 t5hos are not too much light for a standard 90g if you are trying to keep corals, but the bulbs should be replaced every 6 months for best results. Older bulbs "color shift" and you get more red/yellow and less blue which can contribute to an increase in cyano and algae growth.
