Please help! Rapid Tissue Necrosis

Just came home and several of my sps are suffering from RPN. I just did a water change about 3 days ago and Im worried I might have done something wrong. I also noticed that the temp was 76 so I turned up the heater to 79. AHHHHH I will try and get some water tests asap! I did add some supplements straight to the display which I have never done. Strontium, Iodide, CoralVite and Reef supplement. I add these once a month at the regular dose because I am not real good about doing water changes and dont want my system to be depleted of these things. I think my Pearlberry will be a goner by tomorrow. I tried to clip of the worst of it but its really small to begin with. POOP Anyone know what normally causes this? I have had problems with the slow tissue loss but never anything this fast

In my 24g cube I had real hard time with SPS. There's just not that much margin for error. I had a rainbow monte that was doing great, then I moved it and.... Zap it was bleached. What had happened was I added some PH buffer to the back and the back pump blasted the monte with it and it was gone overnight. Rookie move, i know. Maybe your last change had a vast difference in salinity and that was all in took to shock it.

Sorry to hear that though.

Well, I cut the last centimeter of healthy coral from 3 sps and reglued them really well to seal up the tissue. I chunked the rest of the affected coral and tomorrow I will go have my water tested and get some CoralRx to dip them. :( Hope for the best because I cant afford to replace any coral anymore. I thought I was done stocking and ready to sit back and watch the grow.

Alk swing will nuke sps- have you done your water testing yet? I would image it was alk over anything else if you think it is tied to you water change- it was rodi water correct? If so it should have any N or P so we can rule that out ? What was the salinty befOre after etc

Small tanks, you need to test before a wc and make sure your salinity and alk match. If not it can wreak havoc on a small system. Im with bobkill, probably an alk swing when u dosedd chems. Just my thought

Im going to start testing before water changes now too. Im pretty sure you are right about the alk but dont have the proof because I didnt test before change. I went way too long without a change though (probably like 4 weeks) and last time I went 3 weeks I checked before and my alk was 7 and after change was 9 so I bet it was pretty drastic this time. Live and learn. Unfortunately, I have not had a chance to test the water but everything seems fine now (aside from the colonies I lost already). My mother in law is staying with me right now so things have been crazy. Hopefully I can take a sample in to have it tested tomorrow. Live and Learn

Well everything tested somewhat fine. Alk was 9 1/2 and I suspect it was somewhere around 6 before the water change. My calc and mag are off the charts high. Custom Reef Creations really helped me out. Bill said that if I was mixing Reef Crystals to 1.026 the concentration of calc, alk and mag would be way high and that I need to either change salts, or mix it to the recommended 1.022 and do my water change when my salinity is high in the tank instead of topping of with fw. I think this will really help along with more regular water changes and possilby dosing alk to keep it consistantly at 9. He hooked me up with 3 sweet frags to replace the ones I lost. a Strawberry Shortcake Acro, Mr. Miagi Tort, and a Rainbow Pocillipora and two One Shots of Coral Rx to dip them and my other corals in. Everything looks great now, and 2 of the 3 corals I nuked may even survive. (very tiny frags of them but hey, its better than nothing.) I do have test kits but they are old and all but the mag and phosphate kits are API and not very accurate. I would like to get salifert kits for everything but they are $$$. The api kits work but I can only get a general idea of where I am at and the calc kit stinks. Plus its just hard to sit down and do all of them when I have a 13 month old screaming at me. No excuse though. If I want to keep a successful nano reef, I know its going to have to be done.
