Please Help!! Tank Smells!!!!

I don't see anywhere that the tank is a 180 gal and your entire response is uncalled for.

1) He's posting in the LARGE TANKS forum - therefore if he doesn't have a 180G+..... he's lost and posted in the wrong forum.

2) The Large tank forum is separate because these systems are typically run on an entirely different scale than smaller tanks. The equipment is not just bigger, closed loops are more common, complex plumbing, more livestock is under your care, and mistakes can cost thousands, if not tens of thousands.

3)Not understanding a simple thing like fresh Liverock stinks, or the amount of humidity a larger tank can create shows a lack of research.

4)NUMBER ONE priority is providing a sustainable environment as much as possible so that the creatures within the aquarium can THRIVE not just survive.

Joshua 2209, I want you to be successful, but you were unable to answer a few very basic questions that can give another reefer insight into being able to provide solutions without totally shooting off answers in the dark.
Is it a moisture related problem?, or a oxygen depletion problem?, dieoff from too much, too fast? these questions are much easier to answer with tank shots and a status as to the current water chemistry.

No tank details, No proper information

Poser - looking for attention.

Uneducated Newbies don't buy 180+ gallon tanks

That was harsh to a guy who is just getting into the hobby. He just signed up to RC a couple of months ago. Give him a break. He's here for answers - if only every new reefer would do that.

FWIW, IMO, I have always recommended that newbies start with the largest tank they can. Most newbies start with a tiny tank trying to 'start small' and don't realize how much harder smaller tanks can be. Dillution is the solution to many of the problems we face in this hobby - maybe somebody gave him this advice and he actually heeded it.

joshua2209 - photos and a description of the system, as others have mentioned, would be helpful.
* The water itself can stink if it's a new tank. Granular activated carbon can help.
* Protein skimmers often cause stink. Give your cup vent a wiff to see if this is part of the problem.
* Many larger systems do indeed create humidity problems that can make a house pretty musty. I would pick up a humidity gauge - they are only a few bucks. If it's high, you will need to vent or get a dehumidifier.
* Water on carpet can cause problems too.
* Fish and corals can also smell but I'm not thinking this would be your problem due to the fact that it is a new setup. Carbon could help with this too.

sorry to the person that got so ****ed off. i was too busy getting my money back from my LFS that gave me the wrong live rock feed and it killed my rock. i think it was un needed foryou to call me a "newb" which i am not. second of all theres no area for a 125. i thoght it would be better to put it in a large reef area than a nano reef forum. third of all, why would i want "attention" on a reed tank site??? loooosseeer.

and thank all the other people for helping me. my lfs sold me all the wrong stuff trying to take advantage of me so we got our money back "over 2000 dollars" and we have to start the tank over. now im at an awesome place called sea escapes ltd. if anyone lives in st charles in illinois, its the coolest lfs ive seen.

Joshua, what is "live rock feed" and what do you mean "killed the live rock"? How many pounds of live rock, was it cycled at the fish store, what's your equipment list- filtration, circulation, lighting, etc? what are the tank parameters?

hey eric:] ya i know i dont really know what im talking about. but small story short my rock died off. and that started to make a scum on top of the water and all that gross stuff. im obviosly new to the hobby, although ive had like 3 tanks before this. they were all small. so if i seem to say something that doesnt make sense ill try to make it sound normal later. haha.

any how to answer ur questions yes it was cycled at the store. it was about 50 pounds. all my equipment is top notch but my sump is just "ok". I was gunna go DIY for the sump but im not that good at that stuff :P for my sump i have an all glass model 4. for up to 210 gallons. circulation im not to sure what its called. my new lfs(not the one that screwed every thing up) comes out to houses to help people out. he gave me some new stabilizers and stuff like that. but he gave me a power head and said it would help with getting algae and die off off of the rocks. lighting i have a nova-extreme. im not home right now so i cant give you all the specs on the light but ill find out later if thats needed.

Josh, its sounds like the LFS didn't know or care about your set-up. If the rock was already cured, you shouldn't had a large amount of critters dying once it went into your tank. Your tank is 125 gal, right? For circulation, I'd shoot for 15-20 X the volume/hour. That along with adequate skimming and adequate light should clean the tank right up. Course, water changes may be needed depending on the water parameters.

Are you running a skimmer? How are you getting the water to the sump? If you're getting surface skum on the water then you're not getting enough movement of the surface AND you're not sending the surface water down to the sump and the skimmer.

nothing personal, but honestly, you are in the wrong forum!
you should be in the [just getting started forum]
for one, your tank is not that big and doesn't belong here
also, you are very inexperienced just from your posts so you'll probaly get quicker info in the newbie forum.
you say top notch equipment? like what? you have to be more specific and you shouldn't be able to get scum on top of the water with proper flow and skimming. hence, this should be moved MODS.

jeez im tired of people telling me im doing everything wrong. sorry for ruining your life 0_o. anyway i fixed the problem so thank all of you who helped and didnt just tell me im in the wrong forum.:P
