Years ago I had a bad outbreak of Valonia and one of the guys I used to get my livestock from told me I needed to keep my rocks cleaner. From that point on I have always used a turkey baster and brush (usually bought as a package) to keep my rocks free of detritus etc. Valonia has never been an issue afterwards. I believe it has something to do with the algae feeding off the cr@p that is on your rocks. Also, don't squish them, pretty sure the bubbles will release spores. I just peel them off the best I can.
