I have a nikon d90 and I have been completly frustrated with the stock lense lack of ability to take reef shots. MFD is to big and the zoom too little to do any macro work.

I cannot justify the expense of a lense solely for the reef> ie 100mm macro. I am looking to take macro shots but also have the versitility for telephoto. I am looking at this.

Tamron AF 70-200mm f/2.8 Di LD IF Macro Lens with Built in Motor

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Try looking at lens info on photography on the net's forum and find out what might work for you. I am not familiar with your lens or camera.

You should be able to get some good shots with a DSLR and kit lens though, but not extreme close-ups. You may want to try looking at extension tubes as a potential alternative. Additionally, getting an adaptor to turn your lens backwards also works. These are less costly, more DIY, and likely more difficult to work with to produce great results alternatives to a dedicated macro lens.
