I dont know what time of algae this is but it is coating my glass. it is a powdery green that comes off very easily but i dont know how to get rid of it. all of my numbers for water quality are in check. i did use purple up to start but i have stopped to see if that makes a difference, i dont know what it is and i dont see it on any other aquariums. it almost looks like algae that i would get in a freshwater tank. it only goes on the glass live rock is looking great and snails crabs and tubeworm fan are all doing fine....what is this and how do i get rid of it. it will come abck in about three hours of scrapping?

Just normal algae IMO.

What type of snails and how many do you have? What are your nitrates/phosphates?

To me it sounds like its probably just normal algae that fixing a simple problem should help..

First...
What are your nitrates and phosphates testing?
Do you use RO/DI or Tap water?

two turbo snails ten small hermits ....turbos are large..........they qare doing a good job but what i am wondering is what kind of algae it is i havent seen it on any books or pictures or heard people talk about it i just want to know what it is

stomatella (fingernail) snails while not being very attractive do a great job of cleaning that type of algae off the glass. They are quite ugly but they do a beautiful job and will reproduce in your tank most likely. And they are nocturnal so you don't see them during the day :).

I think that i have found out what it is. i have been using reverse osmosis water, however it is drinking water that i found out might still carry phos. in which the algea uses to make this green dust like algea....which is also why i still get a zero phos reading......anyone else heard of this?

no clue what it is, but i also get it and i've seen it in plenty of other tanks...i call it "normal" alga

But now that i've got a large mix of snails, i dont see so much of it anymore.

I suggest getting a lot more than just 2 snails...the hermits arent gonna do a thing (specially on the glass), and turbos...well i dont care so much for them..

I would say get a bunch of astreas/ceriths, maybe some trochus (basically the same as astreas though...). Thats what i've got and dont really notice it at all....i just scrape the glass every couple weeks and its fine.

And yes, that is normal for you to get 0 phos because the algae is using it all.
