Well i think i have a mantis in my tank i heard a click sound. I was wondering though if anyone can post a video or sound of exactly how they sound. My second question is that today i plan on moving my rock around and im kinda scared to touch it can it bit though my rubber gloves. Can it hurt me. Thanks for any help, also if you read this and know anything please help i really want to get my rock moved around. Thanks puffer21

Where did you get the rock from? It could be a pistol too! Have you noticed any snail shells laying around, or missing crabs? That would be a sign of a mantis, just clicking doesn't really tell us much

No i still have all my fish and snails. I was listening at night and i heard it but i havent seen any thing.

Could be a pistol shrimp. Have you notice a lot of sand moved at the base of a rock? Pistols are excellent sand movers, and can dig a hole faster than you could imagine!

no the sand looks normal but i also dont have that much sand. I have a 29 gallon tank and 10 pounds of sand.

Okay, see if you can trap him! Get a 2-liter bottle, and cut the top off of it, and the flip it over and put the nozzle inside. Put a piece of krill in there and watch for something to crawl inside. A mantis will most likely go in to get it and not be able to get back out.

Do you think it is a mantis then. Do you have a video of exatly what they sound like too. Also i dont have krill, but i will go out and buy some. But can i still fix my rock work today. Or will it hurt me.

It just sounds like a click. But the mantis and the pistol sound the same. To be honest, I don't know what it is! Could be either/or for all that I know. Any meaty food may draw him out, so no need to buy krill just for him. If you have squid, or anything that is fresh, just use that. A pistol won't come after the food, b/c they are nocturnal, but a mantis may come after it depending on the species.
Where did you get the rock from?

It can hurt you, yes. If it is small, it will only break skin. Only the bigger one's will really do some damage. Do you know the rock it may be in? If you do, take it out and try to flush the guy out

well this video explains what a pistol shrimp sounds like,

http://www.pages.drexel.edu/~su24/Snapping Shrimp.mpeg

but i think they can only snap slowly, what i mean is that mantis shrimp can be like this>>> clickclickclickclick, in rapid succession
and pistol shrimp just are like this>>> click....................click............
unless of course the mantis shrimp only felt like clicking once

also, Timmy has posted a video of his mantis shrimp attacking a crab, and it clicks rapidly

Not entirely true... look through this forum, and you will find that this has been an arguement for a long time now. I have a pistol that will click in rapid succession like my mantis will. It depends on what they are doing at the time.

I concure, I aggrivated one of my pistols trying to reach a coral frag behind my LR. I could jut bearly touch it with my fingers so it took ma a while to get a hold. The whole time I had a pistol shrimp popping away like a fiend, every bit as fast as a mantis. If the little bastard had left me alone I wouldn't have taken nearly as long, but with him right next to my hand I couldn't help but twitch for each pop. It was like the doctor was playing drums on my knee, but it was my fingers.

Its highly unlikely that your hichhiker is large enough to do any real damage, that would be one nice sized stomadopod. more likely that if its a mantis you wouldn't get popped by it moving your rock around. IF you did get struck I would imagine it would be something requiring no more than a band-aid, if it even broke the skin. Unfortunately though if by rubber gloves you mean kitchen like gloves, you aren't going to get much protection.
