I found this snail. Can I get an ID and whether or not if it is reef-safe?

I think zebra are either black &white or tan & white.
This one is yellowish & black. It's not a hitch-hiker on a piece of LR. They live in local waters(Mediterranean sea) but we are quite close to Red Sea.

I requested this thread to be moved o Other Inverts for our local snail guru to take a look. He should be able to give you a positive ID.

Yes, it's reef safe. It's a trochid or related algae eater, probably a Monodonta or Diloma species. I'm at work right now, but I'll try to ID it to the species level when I get home.

Cheers,

Don

Thanks Don,
please if you can ID the species that would be great. The rocks in the sea near my place are filled with these guys. I will try get some out, shoot some better pictures of the shell and the opening, return them back to their rocks and then send you the pics to get a better chance for an ID.

I may have jumped to a conclusion on this species, if it's from NY. There is an Eastern Pacific littorinid that looks almost just like this, although none of the east coast littorinids would normally have that pattern. Did it come from New York, and do they all have that pattern? An aperture photo with the animal withdrawn would help, since the operc's on all the options are significantly different.

My location is misleading. I am actually from Cyprus(island in the Mediterranean sea, south of Turkey and west of Libanon).
All of them have the same coloration/pattern on the shell. When the snail withdraws it looks like it has a harder part of its body that uses closes the opening.
It lives on the rocks(can't find any on the sand) and as far as I know, the Mediterranean sea does not have any coral reefs due to the climate and higher salinity(ranges: 1.028-1.030).

I will try to get more photos on Saturday.
And I'll correct my location...
