Ok, i have a chevron tang that has been in my QT now since May 25th..he has gone through Prazi treatment along with a full treatment of CP. He eats great but i don't understand what is going on with him. I had posted about this in early June because that is when he first displayed this but after the CP treatment it went away. Now it has resurfaced and i was planning on putting in the main tank next week. There are 2 other fish in the QT as well and they have never displayed anything at all. Please i need some advice.

I cannot confirm what it is for certain but it looks like ich to me. I would not consider added it or the other two fish into your main tank until this is resolved. Delay the addition as long as possible. I am sure some others will be able to provide a clearer diagnosis.

Its definitely not ick i can assure you of that. What you see on the fish is white stringy substance in different lenths..best i can describe it is like thin white pieces of hair hanging from his body

I agree that it does not look like Cryptocaryon, but I'm not sure what it might be. How long ago did you cease CP treatment?

Its been over 3 weeks now at least...I initially started running carbon and used light and after that i did a 90% water change.

This fish did not come from an LFS, i got him from a local reefer who had him for over 5 years with no issues.

I'd have said some type of fluke if you hadn't treated. Might be worth the search though to see if anything matches up on an image search or that is resistant to prazi and cq? Might not be worth the search time either.. wouldn't have felt right looking without saying, but my confidence level is low.

I seem to recall someone having a similar ailment with a Powder Blue Tang, but I don't believe it was ever resolved. I'll see if I can find the post.

[edit] Here's the post.

That sure looks like the same thing in that post, what to do though? My main DT has been fallow now since April, I don't want to be doing this over again

Do you have a microscope? Might be worth examining one of the white masses to get a better sense of what you are dealing with.

I don't but today he is totally clear of it. Not sure what to make of it....Would giving him a bath in a concentration of Hydrogen Peroxide do anything?

I would just observe for another week or so to make sure the issue does not return. I see no benefit in further treatment unless you know what you are treating for.

Well the issue returned unfortunately, he still is fine otherwise. Not sure what to do next with him. I was away for a week and my harlequin tusk died for no apparent reason. He was just fine before I left and just after a few days the person that was dropping by to check on them told me. He never displayed any issues before and he's been with the others in QT since May.

not sure if it will help, but have you done a fresh water dip?

No I have not, and I have not had good results in the past trying this. Also, per the other thread posted in this one, FW dips were attempted in the past for this with no results. I do have formalin on hand, should I try that? How would a formalin bath be properly executed?
