I personally check phosphate based on a scale of if algae is growing on my rocks or not.

Algae isn't going to grow much w/o phosphate, if algae is growing I don't need a test to tell me what is going on.

Until you see yellow, you're too high. Once you see yellow, you need a low range kit. You want to be < .02 ( generally)

I agree, with an API test, if it's not yellow, then you have a phosphate problem no matter what tint green it is.

If you can I would suggest getting your water tested at lfs or buying a better test kit. I was testing my water for phosphate with api and when I held the vial up to the light it would be yellow but when I held it up to the white background next to the color samples it would have a green hue to it. Very hard to read.

So I took some water to my lfs and they tested it with a salifert test kit and my water came up with about .03

The guy at my lfs store also told me salifert is selling their kits direct through Amazon now at very good prices.
