Hi,

Could anybody pls help to ID my clam and comment on its visual condition, it seems quiet happy I've had it for about a month now.

Cheers

It is a Tridacna crocea

I would face it toward the light, it appears it may be losing some color. What kind of lighting do you have?

Hi Barry,

I have 2 x 150w metal halides 10k, 2 x 54w T5 10k and 2 x 39w T5 Blue tubes. My tank is +- 260 gal (1000lt).

BTW Thks for the quick response

Wayne,

Don't know how deep your tank is but I would suggest placing your T.crocea up in your rock work. If the clam came from someone that had less light than you, then you want to slowly acclimate it to your lighting. ie, move it closier to your lights. :)

I agree. It does not look like it's in great condition. Face him straight up, and move him up towards the light.

Good luck!

Using that picture as an example, can someone enlighten me on how you can differentiate between a maxima and crocea?

its kinda hard to discribe lol, Maxima clams have a differnt mantel pattern and a differnt shell, you just have to see a pic of a maxima and a crocea, its hard to discribe, its one of those thing when you see them enough you can tell them apart right away, kinda like twins.

Mantle patterns should only be used to ID clams as a last resort, they are often misleading especially to the inexperienced. Byssal opening followed by shell morphology are the best indicators.
