plug, tile, rubble, or other

I am sure there are many on here that frag zoas to help fund a more diverse collection. I thought it would be interesting to share experiences on the best surface to grow them on.

Growth rate out of ten - with ten being the best...

  • 7 ceramic tiles (from lowes)
  • 5 aragonite plugs on their own
  • 6 aragonite plugs with bits of rubble stuck to them
  • 7 bits of rubble
  • 8 marinepure ceramic media cut in half

It would be helpful to compare and contrast growth rates. If you have also tried the same z/p on a variety of surfaces please share.

I've tried to adhere zoanthids to a lot of different things over the years, but all in all rubble seems to work out the best IME. It's almost a natural attraction. ;)

+1 on rubble. My guess is natural live rock allows the zoa to draw the proper amount of minerals ect.,which exsists in a proper, "Live" microbiome to sustain vigorous growth.

Rubble works well but if your propagating them to sell/trade, its easier to use the 1inch tiles. They don't blow around, looks clean and they spread well on a smooth surface.

I hate frag plugs and if I can detach my frag from them, I do it all the time. Not natural with a bunch of frag plugs in a tank that is suppose to depict and replicate a piece of the reef found in the wild!
