Plugged media reactor sponge solutions?

Hi, I am new to the forum and have an equipment question. I am using a Geo Media reactor to run Feric Oxide, its powered by a Maxi-Jet 1200 using a valve to regulate the water intake. When the Geo bottom sponge (media sits on top of this) gets plugged it lifts up and causes a small area to have preferential flow of water that more or less makes the entire unit useless. The filter in the Geo plugs up in 1-2 months and is a clumsy mess to remove and clean. I always end up losing D-D ROWAphos, which is annoying because it's so expensive. I am running a filter sock in the sump where the maxi feed is located. This is what I have come up wit, please let me know what you think:

1st failed solution.
I cut a Geo replacement part plastic mesh screen to fit the inside of the reactor.
My reasoning was that a screen would allow me to turn up the flow to over fluidize the media and allow the collected less dense gunk to blow up through the media and out the reactor. It failed because with flow under or over fluidized the D-D ROWAphos trickled through mesh at a constant rate.

2nd idea
Slice the factory sponge thin to reduce gunk accumulation and having to break down the unit.

3rd idea
Use multiple layers of crossed screen that will reduce the mesh size to prevent D-D ROWAphos trickling or use some kind of small holed diffuser plate (know where to find them?), but still allow gunk to pass.

4th idea
Replace the factory sponge with a larger pore sponge.

5th idea
Pre-filter on maxi jet and that would be easier to clean and either a thinned factory sponge, large pore sponge, or crossed screens.

Does anyone else have this problem or found a mod that improves the media chambers performance? I noticed Deltech removed their lower sponge on their chambers and use a diffuser plate only, anyone know where to buy one or how to make it? Thanks.

Then see "œFR 509 Fluidized Reactor", sorry no direct link.
