Plumbing bean animal from external overflow from the bottom

So I have a stupid question here.

Do I have to have a downturned elbow on the siphon line if the bulkhead is on the bottom?

Imagine this picture:

Just take the elbow off the siphon line so that the only thing present is the bulkhead by itself. Everything else plumbed like it's supposed to be.

Reason being, my overflow box is tiny. I can't fit it.

It would depend how deep your external box is. If it is deep enough, you don't need any elbows.

None of them need it, if as mentioned, you have the depth. I would cut the open pipe at a shallow angle instead of flat if i were to have no elbow though, to give a little more control over when (and how much) water enters it. Even that may not actually matter but i would do it anyway.

If it's too close to the surface it will create a vortex and suck air. Otherwise, no, you don't need the elbow.

Consider putting a strainer on it to keep snails, etc out

This is what I started out with. Eventually I just took off the pvc and elbow from the middle and put in a strainer.

I had to add them to mine because of this.

I think you're fine taking it off the siphon line. the siphon should always be filled with water so it should be fine. The vortex and sucking air comments I think were about removing the elbow from the "open" line, which I would leave with an elbow and a vent line (like you planned)

I setup a few BA systems using just a flat, low profile strainer for the siphon line with no issues, and normal emergency and backups.
