why do some people run the plumbing in an H shape with valves that are split...etc etc etc....thanks.....

good question....

good question....

i forgot to mention that I am a newbie and dont know what that means....im not hopeless thought, i will search for it on google....

i was under the impression that the sump was the place the bioballs and filter pad went....as far as being external .....Ill just look it up....thanks for the link....

From what I understand if your going to have the fuge, you don't really need the bio balls in the sump. So if it is big enough you might just be able to convert the sump into a refugium. Or get a larger fuge and add on to the system. If I am wrong someone please correct me.

I would stray away from bio-balls and filter pads in reef tanks. They will lead to nitrate problems. Go to Melev's site in the link I gave you. There's tons of information and pics of sumps, fuges, and the like. A sump is basically a box of water to house all of your equipment like the skimmer, heater, etc... You can baffle a fuge into the sump and grow some chaeto in there. Check out the link, lots more there. ;)

That's partially correct Spleify. :) There is no need for any bio media in the sump if you have enough live rock in the system. A minimum of 1lb/gallon will give you enough bio filtration to support the bio load. ;)
