Plumbing help

Setting up my new DB 35g RR with corner overflow. It has a 1 1/4" Durso pipe that reduces to a 1" bulkhead. This goes to a 1" hose that goes almost straight down thru the bottom of the stand, my floor, and drains to the sump in the basement.

There is little to no noise coming from the Durso. I don't care about the noise at the sump because it is in the basement.

My issue is the noise from the 1" hose that runs from the bulkhead to the floor. I am not interested in making the tank a dual overflow, Herbie type system. I do not want a third hole in my floor or the return going over the top of my rimless tank.

A Ball Valve on the 1" hose at the sump drastically reduces the noise but increases the chance of a flood.

The Durso has a strainer over it that would prevent anything much larger that an 1/8" from entering the drain line so I was thinking I may use the Ball Valve but open it fully when we go on vacation (noise wouldnt be an issue).

I am wondering if there is a fix that I have not found to this point. The system is still in the set up stage because I am purposely taking my time to make sure I think things thru.

Thank you

If you are not willing to go to a Herbie, then put a gate valve on the drain.
A gate valve costs a bit more but is much easier to make fine adjustments to.
IMO it is not a good idea, as it may increase your risk of flood. But you are already aware of that.

I put two layers of pipe insulation around the 1" drain hose tonight and it helped a little.

I am going to pick up either some sound board or 1 1/2" styrofoam insulation tomorrow at work tomorrow to line the inside of the stand including closing off the back of the stand which is mostly wide open.

I will pick up a gate valve at the same time because I do like the idea of having a finer adjustment. Also, if I open the valve to eliminate the chance of overflow if we leave for extended periods I can mark the gate valve making it easier to return it to the correct setting.

I thought about putting a Y or T on the drain line in the stand and running an extra piece of 1" hose from there to the top of the stand. Kind of like a rush hole. Not sure if this would help but it has me curious. I just hate to redo what I have done to satisfy my curiosity.
