Plumbing question, dorso related

I'm gearing up my 60g and getting started plumbing for the first time and had a few questions.

This is how the overflow box is currently set up w/ Dorso in it;

FYI - I slimmed some of the PVC down to make it lower profile in the pic above

1. Does the dorso have to point in this direction or can I have it set up sideways?

With it being sideways it gives me roughly 1.5" more space to slim the overflow box back by a couple inches to the 4-5" mark on tape.

2. Does the overflow box have to be deep at all? Previous owner had a DIY wier and it's pretty awful, large gaps w/ crooked teeth and it's about ~2" below my ideal waterline so what I would like to do is maybe raise the box to about the 3 or 3.5" mark on the tape to fix the wier and also bump the waterline up a inch or two

All my proposed changes, not to scale :worried: but my general ideas.

Let me know if I'm way off w/ my plans or if they may work, look forward to the feedback.

If it aint broke, dont fix it.

There is a certain dynamic to overflows and how much water they can actually allow through based on how long they are....some one should read this and be able to give you better exacts, but "x" amount of length can handle "y" amount of water in gph. So, per your tank, decreasing the amount of water that can actually get in to the overflow per hour may result in effecting your plumbing too. Aestethics are one thing, but a properly functioning system...another.

but yes, you can turn your durso sideways. it wont matter. decreasing the overflow may. you may have to drill holes to compensate for the gph loss.

I think you will be just fine as long as you're not restricting the flow thru the drain pipe by pushing it to the side. The larger overflow box just has a bit more surface area for skimming but it is not all that necessary. Your plan sounds fine to me.
