Plumbing Questions For AGA Megaflow Overflow...

Ok, got my new 90g tank home, and now comes the build phase. Need to decide what to do about the overflow plumbing, do I spring for the $50 AGA megaflow overflow kit for the holes, or do I just get a set of 1" & 3/4" bulkheads and just use Lowes plumbing to connect everything? I know i'll need a J-pipe to keep the water from making too much noise as well as a return pipe, but is it easier to do it myself or get the kit? Also, do I use a threaded bulkhead or not? For the return should I just run a pipe up to a 90 then connect it to loc-line? Also, with a ball valve under the drain line, can I fill the tank without the sump under it, maybe with the line capped off after the valve? My plan is to get the stand built, set the 90g up on top and get it going with my HOB filters/skimmer, then get the 75g baffled and ready to go under the 90g. Does this all sound right, or is there anything you guys can suggest to make this transition easier. I'm a little scared of everything right now!

Call Chad at Gateway to see what his price is on the Mega-flows, I paid $50 for 2 when I bought my tank a year ago.

I doubt you would have $50 in the piping and bulkheads. If you can glue pipe together is it really needed to buy them?

$10 per bulkhead x 2, probably $1 per fitting x 6 +1 for return, plus pipe $3. probably cost you about $30 + loc-line to DIY

I wouldn't call it better because I've never done the Durso, but I had to go with the Hofer because I didn't give myself enough room for the elbow on the durso.

I ran the durso on my 90 for a few years and the only noise I could hear was the pumps humming. Rich1972 has it now you could ask him what he thinks or scarecrow. I will make one for my 58 here in a bit. If you go by durso's specs you are actually making your pipe bigger than the mega-flow AGA standpipes. less restriction plus I just like to save money where I can on these projects. Even if you are bad with the purple stuff this would be the first project you wouldn't have to look at the end results. I highly recommend the durso pipes easy to make if you have a miter saw just be careful

Sounds good, definately gonna attempt the durso pipe. One question though, if I order the 1" & 3/4" bulkheads for the tank, what size are the threads on them? Also what size loc-line should I use for the return, 1/2" or 3/4"? Thanks again for the help!!!

You do not have to use loc-line on the returns at all.

I think I'll be starting the build thread on my 75 this weekend.

This is how I did my return. 1" pipe reduced down to 3/4" loc-line. The return pipe in the over-flow I capped for future considerations of another return utilizing a second standpipe. The over-flow kept up with the Mag12 enough that I didn't worry about a second return.

In the instructions you will have a shopping list of parts to build your stand-pipe. You have a decision if you haven't ordered you bulk-heads to go with slip or threaded. I went threaded personal preference.

How large is the overflow. I suspected on the 75 I would have to use both of the drilled holes for drains and then run my return lines back over the top as you did.

I think I will make both drilled holes into drains for peace of mind and so that I can assure myself of no overflows.
