Plumbing Questions From A Newbie

I'll be using a Quiet One 3000 for my return. It has a 1" MNPT for the output.

From what I understand, if I'm using 1" drain from my overflow, then its recommended to use 3/4" for the return. Is this correct?

If this is correct, then obviously I need a way to convert the 1" MNPT from the return pump to 3/4" piping.

Is this accomplished by using this adapter: http://www.aquaticeco.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/product.detail/iid/7288/cid/1914

The one to get would be the Female Adapter, 3/4" x 1" (slip x FNPT) ??

Just getting an idea before I head to Lowes/Home Depot this weekend.

JOSEPHLB - I have a Quiet One 3000 also as my return pump. I used 1.25” pvc so I applied an adapter at the pump with 1” MPT threads to the 1.25”. I would not choke the pump down with ¾” pvc. I would run at least 1” pvc from the pump up to the bulk head fitting and then adapt it to the 1” pvc. You should be able to get all of this at Lowes/Home Depot no problem. Make sure you use a union so that you can remove the pump for service. I have to remove the calcium buildup about every other week. Here is a pic of mine:

Jay.. thanks.

I'll stick with 1" all the way through for my return.

I'm using a Hurricane U-tube overflow, that has a single 1" bulkhead / 1" drain..

The plan is to "T" off the return, and utilizing a ball valve to redirect some of the flow back into the middle (fuge) section of my sump; only in case the return seems to be exceeding my overflow and/or to keep the flow through the sump a little on the slower side.

Or, could I get away without the "T" since I am obviously going to have some head loss, up to and over my tank?

I’m using a u-tube overflow with dual 1” bulkheads. My max flow is probably around 800 gph. With the QO 3000 I’m probably pushing 550 gph.

That is probably a good idea. I T’d mine off to a phosban reactor and I put a ball valve above the pump in case I had to throttle it back but I did not need this.

Use the Head Loss Calculator here to estimate. I’m not sure of the Hurricanes flow rate but you will not want to exceed that. My return line is 1.25” up to a T. Then it is split into two 1” lines that go up and over the top of the tank. Here is a pic of the sump and there are more pics of the setup if you click my red house.
