Plumbing suggestions

Hey gang,

I drew this up today. Looks like the 225 build will not come to fruition. instead it will be replaced by a 180 that I am picking up tomorrow. Here is the plumbing diagram that I will be using. the system is basically the same with the sump in the garage, except I will be doing a close loop and the pump will be housed in the crawlspace. all of this is going to be hard plumbed in. I didnt draw in the unions and valves. those will be added when I get the parts.

Instead of going over the top with your returns, Why not drill the back and use the Glass Holes set up? It would be much cleaner in the long run, And easy to do at this stage of the build.

Bill, I was going to look into doing that, but now ive decided to use the seaswirls that are coming with the tank. I am going to place them at the front corners of the tank so they blow back at the reef instead of the glass. the loop will below from the back opposite of the sump returns. I liked the way it looked in that tank from DR Sanjay they had on the video from the seaswirl site.

the other think I could not figure out was how to stop the siphon if I drill thru for the returns. if they are underwater, how do I stop the siphon without relying on a device that can inhibit flow and possibly fail.

the other option is to use the holes drilled for the loop as the returns and put the loop on the seaswirls. but doing that, I would have an issue with Siphon.

It's called a check valve, Or you can keep the nozzels at the top of the water line with an anti sypon hole drilled in the line. Easy!

Bill, basically put 2 elbows on it to raise it up to the water line? the pipe would still have to extend fully beyond.

I thought about the check valve. but i need to research them. it woudl have to be a 2" valve. I know there are rubber ones, do you think they would work? I used to work for a company that made and distributed 2" sewage check valves. all rubber with hose clamps.

I just installed one 2" PVC Check Valve on Dustins parents tank and It works fine. It's just a matter of preference, As i am not trying to force you to any decision just throwing out some suggestions. It's your build and you have to make the final call as tro how to plumb it. I'm just not keen on over the top plumbing, But that's just me.

No worries bill. When I was going to do the bigger tank, I was not going over the edge. There is no way I can see to use the seaswirls without it.

Drain pipe

Drain pipe

Won't the red drain line drain the tank when the pump shuts off?

I'm assuming that those are overflow boxes on the rear of the tank, With Standpipes in them...
Lindsay, I guess as long as it's all hidden by a Canopy it reall dosn't matter where the Seaswirls are located. Most do have them setup in the rear but I see your point to try and get water to the typical dead spots.
In the end if it works for you go for it!
