Plumbing suppliers for the hobby

Always bring a towel
Is there anywhere around town that would have, or could order plumbing items that are of interest to our hobby? I know that Nicklas doesn't really. I was hoping that I could pick up a few fittings locally instead of having to order the online.

What kind of fittings you looking for, most everything I need I can get at hardware store. Anything at lfs ask at counter alot of time there hid in back or something

Elmers has more stuff then you may think, but as far as PVC fittings I have always found every thing I need at home depot.

I use ball valves on my bean drain as well and I wish I hadn't. I'm redoing my plumbing and will be using a gate valve for the main siphon

Sorry, had to pick up my new tank!!! :D If Bill said to use a gate valve, that's what I'd use. I'm sure he had his reasons. During the week, you might be able to get one at Pittsburgh Plumbing and Heating if you have a business to use to get them. 1 inch gates aren't really a common item.

Where are they located? Neither of the plumbing supply houses in Cranberry had them. Fugueson's might be able to order me one, I won't know until Monday.

Exactly. As far as I understand it, you need the fine control that gate valve offers for the main siphon, and since mine is going in the basement, with a ~15' "horizontal" run, I need to be able to keep the siphon going.

No. The according to the Bean Animal style drain, a way to regulate the flow in the main syphon is needed. Most people that I've seen, and after speaking with the man himself on the phone the other day, a gate valve is best suited to this application. Hence the need for a 1 " pvc gate valve like this. http://www.pvcfittingsonline.com/1-pvc-socket-gate-valve-spears-2022-010.html

I will clarify a bit for the sake of those following along:

In most cases, I don't see a need for a gate valve, as once the system is set, it really does not need to be adjusted again.

In this specific case, the sump is in the basement and the display on the first floor. The long drop will generate a large pressure differential, requiring the control valve to be close to the sump instead of on the first floor. In this way, cavitation can be prevented. With the valve so far from the tank and with so much head pressure a gate valve makes far more sense, as minor adjustments will create large changes in flow (as compared to a standard sump-in-stand setup).

Pittsburgh Plumbing will militantly only sell to those who a valid Pittsburgh plumbers card or legitimate plumbing business. They will under no circumstances sell to walk-ins or non-plumbing business. Several years ago I was purchasing about 5K in PEX supplies and possibly 2-3 tankless heaters. (Me, brother, parents). I was flat out told, that they would not sell to me because I was not a certified plumber or plumbing business owner. So I ordered online and gave my money to somebody else.

As for 1" gate valves: Aquaticecosystems (slow shipping) has them. Grainger (spendy) would certainly havethem. McMaster-Car only a day away.

Amazon has tons, as do most of the consolidated websites (sears, Wal-Mart, Home Depot, etc.).

I would go with a 1.25" valve, as they are much more common. Your siphon (in this case) can likely be 1" due to the large amount of head pushing it.

I've used the one in new ken for 25 years. Now I know they know me and I do run a pretty large building, but they don't ask me for a license or anything. Grainger used to pretty much work the same way, but I've always had an account with them. If you're a premium member on Amazon, you could have ordered it and probably had it tomorrow with free shipping!!!

somebody told me grainier really relaxed their rules. Business must be bad. I have an account but rarely use it due to price.
