Plumbing tank to the basement, questions..

I purchased a deep blue 80 gallon tank. I plan on trying a basement sump setup. In my basement will be 3 tanks:a 40g sump, 30g frag tank, and a 20g refugium.
The drop from the tank upstairs is 11 foot to the sump. All 3 tanks ill drain into the sump and my goal is to have 1 big return pump feeding all 3 tanks.

Questions: Plumbing from my main tank upstairs?

1. Ive research and my current goal is to use a Jebeo DC return pump to get me going the upgrade in a year or so,what size should I go with?

2. I plan on doing a 1" return and 1.5" drain pvc, does this sound correct?

3. Overflow style in the main tank is set up for a durso with a 1" hole and a 3/4" hole. I plan on modifying to a herbie style setup and have my return come over the edge of the tank (the glass is tempered). Should i use the bigge or smaller hole for the siphon?

If you think any of my plans are a bad idea please let me know.

I don't think a single Jebao pump will cut it, but it might. I'd lean toward one pump for the display and another to feed the frag and fuge tanks.

With that size tank I think a 3/4 return and drain would be fine.

my drain is 3/4 and my pump pushes around 700GPH easy. So agree, 3/4 would be fine.

Check the head height on that pump. I'm pretty sure none of the DC pumps are high head/pressure rated. Check into pan world, blue line and iwaki pumps.

Abyzz and Royal Exclusiv both make pressure pumps now, though there is a bit of a price premium.

They are a lot more money than the pump the op was showing of.



That being said my iwaki has been perfect for years.

I agree with the folks above. I jeboa pump isnt going to cut it. I have been using a Sicce SDC 9.0 for a few months now. Its running my 90 gallon from the basement at under 50% power.

I would also agree that you will be very unsatisfied with the Jabeo at that head height. I had a lot of problems with mine generating heat and creating terrible calcium build up on the impeller shaft that would stop the pump and that was with the pump just under the tank not going up a floor.

I appreciate all the advice. I guess my best course of action is either to find a good used pump or run 2 different pumps (one for the display and one for the frag and refugium).

Im a little confused on how to decide how big of a pump I need. I have done calculations for head loss but Im unsure if I need to buy something a little over kill or aomething that comes out to be the exact flow rate at 10 feet that I need after all 45 and 90 degree turns are calculated?

I would oversize the pump slightly, but it won't really matter as long as turnover is adequate. Something to consider is the impact of plumbing size on flow. You should oversize your plumbing to get maximum flow. Here's one anecdotal example, but reading up on some of the Neptune FMM threads will yield similar revelations.

I prefer to be a little oversized. Just incase I need to add something to the return manifold. I never like being maxed out on anything. Depending where you are at, Steve at the corner reef had a couple used external return pumps last time I was in there.
