Okay im setting up a 40g breeder. It has a one inch bulkhead drain. I am using a mag 7 in my sump. The output is 1/2". The return will be plumbed to a spray bar in the tank.

1.) Should i drain the output staight into my sump leaving it 1" or reduce it? If so to what size?

2.)Should i leave the return 1/2" or step it up to 3/4" or 1"?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks

1.) Yes, I'd leave it at 1".
2.) Depends....

If your sump is directly under the tank...let's assume that the pump is approximately 4 feet below the top of the main tank before it gets to your spray bar, I would probably leave it at 1/2" just to maintain the pressure. If you step up to 3/4" you'll lose some pressure and may not get as much surface agitation that you want.

Either way, I think it would be fine...but I'd stick with 1/2" and put an inline ball valve in place if the pressure was too much because you can always reduce the flow.
