pocillopora repairing self

My new pocillapora, a 2 inch tree, had damage when I bought it: two branches side by side had lost flesh off the ends apparently when fragged, about an 8th of an inch bare white skeleton. I've been watching it with some concern, but can report now that the naked little white ends are now pink and are showing circles where the polyp-ettes are starting to grow. I think it is just about healed. The process took 2 weeks. You can see the original white dings.

Nice job of helping the poci grow and repair itself. I have found that poci's are very hardy because I have killed off many sps frags over the last two years but somehow the pink poci always survives. It is now a gorgeous pink 3 inch colony.

Thanks! I'm very relieved...it was transportation damage, or frag-damage. It's now totally healed, turned pink under its brown-green fuzz...and going strong on its next set of branches. Would anyone happen to know what kind of pocillopora it is?

It looks to be a generic brown- maybe green type of poci( I had one before it expired). If you give it high lighting and good current, and it is a pink one; it will turn a very brilliant pink.

It looks like a P. damicornus.

Pretty hardy corals for sure.

I recently dropped a little 2 inch frag on the carpet and lost it. I saw it about 1.5 hours later and through it in the tank. Within 1 hour its polyps were back out and it looke great the next day. I couldn't believe it survived after being so dried out and covered in dog hair.

:) P. damicornus. I'll write that down. And I believe you. My ace fool hermit, the largest, decided he had to perch on it during his molt. He would not be dissuaded. But the poci just kept on with his unaffected polyps, and the crab eventually crawled off, no damage done.

they are definitely hardy little buggers. Notorious for "polyp bailout". Once they get started they little clones pop up all over the tank ;)

I could live with that. :) It's a cheerful, unassuming piece and I've got a lot of bare rock.

I got a two small different pocci frags from Matt (tangwang ^) and they have been good growers.

Every few months a small area will sometimes go bear, but it seems to heal quickly, I dont know what causes it, but it has happened two or three times over the year Ive had it.

It has more than trippled in size in that year.

BTW Matt, that stag frag I got from you has started to take off!
