i recently added a couple sea slug to help eat algea. just standard brown/gray ones but i pulled one out this morning with neon blue dots on it? could it be poisonous?

From what I read, most sea slugs are poisonous, especially the brightly coloured ones.

However, that only became a problem if you tried to eat it. :-)

I suggest you send a picture of your slug to these guys:

Or if you know someone who has the book "Nudibranchs of the World: 1,200 nudibranchs from around the world with more than 2,500 photographs" by Helmut Debelius and Rudie Kuiter, you could take a look there also.

Good luck.

The mention of blue spots make me think you have Bursatella leachii - is this it? http://www.seaslugforum.net/bursleac.htm

Toxicity of sea slugs varies greatly. Bursatella & other sea hares are fairly harmless except of course for causing a spike when they die. The red ink they produce is derived from algal compounds & is not toxic.
