Polishing/scratch removal in a running aquarium

I have a biorb 30L set up as marine. Wonder if I can polish it using a 12000 grit cloth while running. Would the tiny particles affect fish/corals? Or should I just empty it?

The reason for asking is simple. One off can empty it no probs. However in the long run I do not want to do this every 2-3 months. Marin algae are tougher to remove vs the green fresh water counterparts.

In the distant past, I removed interior scratches from a running tank using this.

That is correct. However, that tank was 450 gallons But, I don't think you'll have an issue.
