Is it just me or does it seem like everyone and their mother is trying to sell Acans? I agree they are beautiful, but how long will this last? Seems like there is a lot more supply that is readily available than there use to be. Prices are already dropping. Like to get some feedback.

I'm hoping prices drop dramatically. But I share that view with all corals. There’s no reason why you have to pay more than $5 for any frag. Period
However when you’re talking about selling a large colony that’s a different story.<O:p</O:p

There are probably more people selling plain jane Acans, but rainbow/multi colored Acans will never grow out of style. I definitely don't see the prices dropping on the really nice pieces. Unlike sps and softies, acans grow extremely slow so once Australia starts cutting back on exporting, I see the prices only going up.

It depends on what acan you are talking about. Rainbow acans are extremly popular. They are easy care and slow growing. In all ithink all corals have dropped price due to economy ect. On the other hand trading I think is strong.

On the other hand what we are seeing as far as corals the people on the East and West coasts have been gettting them for a while now! As phill said acans are easy to care fro and have some of the crazyest colors in corals out there! I my self have 8 ausie acans and will be picking up more at Fragstock!

Really nice or unusual specimens will never go out of style but the price has already began to fall. A couple years ago I saw some of the average stuff going for 4 or 5 hundred bucks for a medium sized colony.

Acan is the very 1st group buy our club down south did, 4 years ago. There are much nicer Acans coming now vs what was available back then.

Its only worth what people will pay for it. These LE corals crack me up. People will pay more for something with a cool name.

That is very true...if you come up with a catchy name and put LE next to it, someone may think it is something special. But acans will continue to be good sellers, I sold probably 50 frags of acans at MACNA. Some were nice rainbows and some were just colors you don't see everywhere else.

Hummm... Per Bob Fenner and by my own experience after listening to his advice Acans are not slow growing corals like chalices (which can also grow quite quickly). The key is to feed them.

When I was feeding them I would get between 2-4 heads of growth per month. I would use Salifert pellets and silversides. I have since stopped feeding them because I was getting too much growth and had to sell several colonies and was running into nitrate buildup.

I would suggest that you give feeding them a try. I think you will be pleasantly surprised. Same with chalices.

That said I would agree with the above. Prices have come way down on them from a few years ago but the more rare colors are going to maintain their dollar value.

For example I have a colony that is green with dark purple centers (think joker paly's but in an acan) and I know I can get high dollar value for them if I choose to frag and sell them as I have seen similar colonies in stores for the high 200's. You can see the new heads forming at the bottom of the picture and I am feeding this colony very sparingly:

I agree that acans are not the slow growers that some think they are...if healthy and fed, they will grow rather fast.

like everything, the acans will fade and something else will move in it's place. i wish it would hurry up because i think $20 for a head is too rich for me no matter what it looks like.

Not sure were you are buying corals i paid $30 for two rainbow heads from jgonz. I have seen 4-5 heads of rainbow for 50.

I'm not saying they arent cool. the price right now reflects their "cool" factor. i cant think of anyone that wouldnt buy a whole bunch if they were $10 for a decent frag (3-5 heads).

For as restricted as export is, the price also includes availability. Ordering at stores previously, Acans would be readily available for a couple months, and then nothing for months. The only thing bringing the price of these down is the farmers that aquaculture them. Aussie corals are always going to be more expensive because of the limits they put on collection.

Once enough hobbyist have them and start fragging them out they will drop dramatically in price as well as, we won’t have to worry about the availability either.
