WOW SWC is popular now.

I would have thought people could see past the gimmicks.

Diffuser plate will require more power and allow less flow through and difficult to clean. It is the same thing overall.

Well I recently got a SWC 230 for my new build and coming from a ATB 10.5 deluxe, a skimmer I paid $1400 for and was built very well I was a bit nervous that I was going to be let down buy the quality in the SWC. Well I can honestly say that I am very pleased with the build quality! Although not as high quality as the ATB but still much nicer than many I have owned, very solid!

Just to be clear I am speaking of the 230 and 300 cone which would compare closely to your 170 vertex, the older MSX200 and above models also, not the 120/160 swc cone they are good skimmers but the pump can not compete. I owned a BK 250 deluxe and sold it after a month. The investment did not out weight my return.

One of the big complaints about ER skimmers that they did not use better pumps, but some of the SWC skimmers I have seen comments that one should not turn the pump off or lift it out of the water because it will damage the pump. I had a CS5/3 with the Sedra 3500 Sedra pump it was my best skimmer so far, easy to use, pulled chocolate syrup out. Sorry no experience with the SWC skimmer I would like to give one a try though. Er skimmers do not do as good if you oversize them to the bio-load.

I have not experienced any issues with the Atman pump not starting once lifted out of the water however mine was the newer 160 with the larger collection cup. I think they might have changed from a hybrid on the early models to pinwheel impellers. Kinda like the Bubble Magus Nac skimmer uses. Speaking of Bubble Magus if you can afford a little more the BM CS180 cone skimmer is by far my favorite in this size. It has outperformed everything and is dead silent due to the aquabee pump. SWC160 is a close 2nd and cost less.

Maybe you should consider buying a Reef Octopus skimmer also. They make good skimmers.

I have one and think it is great.

Bubble blasters can be loud and people complain of vibration all the time. The SWC atman is on average more quiet. Atman might not have the flow of a bubble blaster on the smaller SWC models but the pump matches the skimmer body perfectly. On the larger SWC models that use the big boy Laguna motor base you can't even find a skimmer for the price that can compete. I rarely ever stand on a rooftop for any product but the SWC line of skimmers are pound for pound the best skimmer out. I would put my 300A up again any of the more expensive brand names out. It might not be built like a Royal exclusive but for what I paid I can buy 3 or 4 more. ATB Deltec too. I think people who buy SWC truely know what price/value is. I love this quote from Warren Buffet "price is what you pay value is what you get". To me this is what SWC is all about and this is why I find myself buying them over and over.

there a poll started about this skimmer check out the results for your self.

I'm sorry but didn't the needle wheel on yours corrode and crack after only two months of use.

Myself I'm still on the fence between the two (sro, swc). All the youtube videos I've seen of the SWC seem to show a very silent running skimmer, while owners of the SRO really sing the praises of the bubble blaster, which seems of late to be going through some quality control issues. But the retailer seems to be taking care of those issues to the satisfaction of many.

Ah decisions.

the pump has a 3 yr warrenty, they sent me a brand spanking new pump along with an extra needle wheel. Things happen man but you should see the cup after olny one day!

It wasn't meant as a knock. I just like to be up front, good and bad. Like I said I'm still fence sitting between the two. I just wish there was a few more videos of the SRO in action so I could get a good listen to the pump. Right know I like the thought of a 3 year warranty on the SRO, but I like the videos I've watched of the SWC, dead quiet

To be honest my pump is dead silent...
