If the coral has all the energy it currently needs from the water will it retract the polyps? Is polyp extension an indication of coral health or is it just that the coral is hungry and can take on more nutrients?

Been debated many times, personally good poylp extension along with good colors seems to be happy corals. Not sure how alk/growth play a role in polyp extension though.
I've watched almost all my Sps go through phases where they're fully extended then for months polyp extension is almost non-existent while color stays the same. Although I started running gac 2 months ago and all my Sps have mad extension I don't wether this is because the reduced amount organic's suspended in the water. It would be interesting wether or not Sps can store energy in interim of polyp extension.
