What exactly are these? Protopalys? I've never seen such long polyps.

Wanting more light probably. Try getting them off the sand and putting them higher up. What kind of lighting do you have?

Actually, this is how they looked when I got them from the LFS. At first I placed them about 5 inches higher and they didn't open much, so I moved them lower and they seem happier.

I have t-5 lighting. And, as you can see with the pink zoas in the pic, there's still plenty of light at the bottom.

Maybe where they originally came from (prior to my LFS) they were in low light conditions?

Nice zoos. Great pick up. I wonder if they will keep their color or the zoos will color up more. Keep us posted. I'd like to see how they morphed to if they do.

I don't know what conditions your lfs had them in, or before they got them, but those are definitely starved for light, in my opinion

They might not have opened at first because of being new to the tank. I would try them higher again and see what happens.

Actually, the full story is they opened up great for the first 4 or 5 days. Then they for the next 4 or 5 they wouldn't open much at all. So I moved them lower and now they've opened back up. I guess it could be coincidence. Polyp length has been the same size all along.

I'm with you that it appears that they are stretching for light, but like I said, I've got plenty of light at the bottom of the tank. I usually place zoas frags on the sand and I've never seen a single polyp stretch for light.

IMO the length of the polyp doesnt always have anything to do with lighting. Different zoanthids have different characteristics and some will be long no matter where in a tank they are positioned. Some do seem to stretch out when they are wanting light though.

I say if there stretching they need more light. I would move them to the middle between where you had them and where you have them now.

Ditto- try and move them up and keep them there for a few days and see how they adjust.
Not all zoanthids come from the same region which will explain some zoas wanting lots of light and some zoas wanting less.
They are also nice btw, hopefully theyll stay that color.

They look like one's I have I 'm pretty sure they are atlantic's sold as seamats. Got them all the time I florida when I lived their. Got them again in Atlanta. Ployps are always about 1 inch long. Mine like mid to upper tank and grow like weeds. Look for pest's I always find them in the Atlantics
