Polyps focused systems & GFO

Wow! You really want to make a point here, don't you?
You need to proof to others (and yourself!!) that the use of GFO is perhaps a must?
If you have a low bioload, specially, you don't really need GFO, period.
Unless you have no idea about reef keeping.

I shouldn't say "when we didn't have GFO", but "when we didn't have GFO in the aquarium trade", or "before the GFO fashion existed" . My fault!

Yep, I've never used GFO and I don't think I will. Why? There is no need for that. Not worthy the trouble.
If with 10 fishes in a 75gal full of zoas I don't need to worry about high phosphates, why waste my money? LOL!!!

LOL!!! I'm sorry but I won't show you any pictures of my tank to proof anything to you. I remember that type of talk when I was in Elementary school!! LOL!
I'm not here to proof anything to anyone. I really don't care, you know?!!! LOL!
And I'm no expert at all!!! I sell nothing...

You know what? If you really think you need your GFO, please continue using, but if you don't please don't waste your money. That's my advice to you and everyone else.

My suggestion is here, and unchangeable.
Most home tanks won't need to worry about the use of GFO to control phosphates in the regular basis, specially talking about zoanthids!!! Or never, ever!! LOL!
If I can do it, anyone can!!! No big deal at all!!

People can decide for themselves.
Read the article I posted before, by Randy Holmes-Farley, and see if the use of GFO would be worthy the try for your system. Whatever you decide it's OK with me. Who am I to impose anything here???

I just posted my opinions and why.

PS: When you brought up the LED episode I kinda understand where you want to go.
Chame on you, boy! I'm better than that... :frog:
I'm out of here before this thread goes south and one of the mods close it for good.
Have a nice time with your GFO and still having the algae on the plugs (?). :hmm4:

Happy Easter to all!
Grandis.

I think this makes it clear that each system is different. I've had tanks that don't need GFO ever like Grandis, and other tanks I have to run it aggressively. Each tank is different and I don't think there's any set in stone rules out there. One of my zoa systems uses GFO and another tank with zoas doesn't. Some like one tank, some prefer the other. I've seen zoa tanks at 0.00 ppb phosphate and I've seen tap water tanks with phosphate over 3 ppm (yes, 3 ppm not .3) with beautiful corals. I think it's hard to make rules in this hobby and everyone will have different results.

Will GFO lower your phosphates? Yes. Do you need it? Probably not! If the problem is phosphates or nitrates, IMHO it can be controlled by other means.

I have run GFO and the results were minimal in my case...nothing good / nothing bad. I have also tried Phosban and lanthanum chloride...Phosban was a BAD experience! lanthanum chloride same GFO but harder to use. I have done other things such as better flow, water changes, and general system cleaning that have shown better results.

With that said, I don't have huge systems like Reefwars. However, advice from Reefwars and Grandis have been very beneficial to me in the past. As I see it, it's a cost i don't need to have...therefore I don't. It's already expensive enough. :)

I have used gfo in a reactor when we had a ton of fish, and now I just change it once I see color on the saliferts test kit. I have just been using it passively in the sump recently. We feed very heavily and phosphates will rise if we don't use something to keep them down. I have tried, even when rinsing the frozen food and not using additives it will still rise. I added a 40breeder for cheato and such so hopefully the God will last a little longer now. I also regenerate my gfo which saves a ton of money and is well worth the cost. I tried carbon dosing a while back but didn't work out too well. I think you can use gfo on any tank as long as your keeping fish and feed the tank. If you use it correctly at least. I have not seen any problems with corals while using gfo. Also using gfo does not cure your tank of all algaes.
