pomphein clams

Last year it was a disaster.

thosands of clams died.

they were by far the most beautiful clams I ever seen, but they were for rent only, all died.

Let's see what happens this year.
I hope they'll get better ones.

They carried a disease which spread to all clams in a tank. Thousands of clams in tanks across he country died. One person would buy one, put it in their tank, and then all 20 of their clams would die....not good! :(

Hey Peabody.
I didnt wanna mention the spreading, cause I heard that some people think, these clams did not spread the disease, they just carried it and died.

Julio, for rent means, you buy a clam and you enjoy it only for one or two weeks.

Again,I do hope that the Pohnpei that are in the market now are better.

that sucks i wish i had known that before i bought some i guess they will be going in quarentine for a longer period than i thought.

:) :) I have one that is a 6" Maxima and he/she/it is doing great. I put it in 90 days ago with 3 other clams and nobody died. I hope it would have happened by now. BTW It is an absolutely beautiful clam. Good Luck

I haven't heard of the disease in a while...perhaps the clams being imported now aren't carrying any more. I hope sure, they sure are AMAZING!

do you guys find that these clams in general are more colorful than the Maximas coming out of the south pacific?

The clam disease threads began in the fall of 2002. There have been hundreds of Ponape/Pohnpei clams coming in since the beginning of last year that have been doing fine.
I have one in my system now for over a year that is doing great.
There have been reported diseases with a number of different clams including maxs and croceas.(nonPonape maxs this past summer) Most of these illnesses arose from poor harvest and shipping techniques-I believe. These clams arrived weakened and ill, contaminating systems.
Lately the wild clams arriving have been healthy. I haven't heard of any recent clam problems.
Hope this helps-
Adam

There is a similar problem that is gong on with dart frogs, which is Chitryd fungus, it is always present in the frogs but is only activated when the frogs get cold, this maybe the same way the clams are being affected and is all in the way they are shipped.

I talking with a couple of dealers, they tell me that clams from that area harvested during the summer months are prone to disease. I was one of the people that ended up losing clams. I purchased 2 large Deresa's a few months ago, so far thier fine. I find my self very hesitant to purchase any from Ponphi area.

well is winter so i guess they are safe to buy this time of year. Any naimals that you plan on putting into yoru main tank should be in a quarantine for a minimum of 4 weeks, that is my phillosophy, if not then you are just playing with fire.

Julio,
You're doing the right thing by puttin''em in quarantine.

I did not hear a thing about the clam disease this year and hope I wont hear about it.
