does anyone know if these can be converted to be used as a sort of fluidized bed/ denitrifying factory? i am interested in trying it, so if anyone has any information pertaining to this, let me know.

a lot of the big box pet stores use these for their carbon. I can tell you that it is not very fun to change the media in these. You have to use a shop vac to get it out. so you have to fit your arm plus a vacum hose through that tiny opening in the top.
i don't think your could get enough flow through that to get anything fluidized... and i don't know what to think of it in a denitrifying system. Perhaps sulfur based but thats the only was i can think of pulling it off.
