poor egg quality

so, I have a breeding pair of onyx percs that just recently began breeding again (they took two years off after our move)

This is their 5th egg clutch since they began again.

they laid 300+ eggs! The next day only 50 remained.

All of their clutches have been like this. But in the past they laid max 150 eggs.

I am feeding them ocean nutrition brine shrimp, reef caviar, cyclopeeze, caulerpa prolifera, ulva, and selcon enriched frozen foods. I feed them at least 5 times a day, and now more because I am conditioning a pair of YWG's as well.

Thanks for the help, tommy.

Add more meaty foods like mysis instead of brine and cyclopeze, or even some pellets. My clowns do good on Formula One pellets. If you are conditioning them to spawn, then I'd probably make some food from shrimp, squid, fish, and clams. Run it through a chopper and freeze it flat in a small ziplock.

Thanks clnfish

Why do meaty foods make them have better egg quality? Is their a type of protien not in my flake foods? because my flake food is 55% protien. Its reef nutrition brine shrimp.

Will fresh caught fish do? like mullet or something?

i feed my clowns,

New Life Spectrum Optimum Salt H2o Flakes and dainichi marine fx with cyclop-eeze. also i feed them mysis 2-3 times a week. the egg loss is so low that i can't even tell. if thats a result of their diet, idk.

I believe it is more the amino acid than the protein they require. Mysis is good as well as whole chopped shellfish (guts and all). My Maroon pair spawn twice a month. Thousands of bright orange eggs. Last hatching was over two nights. I got more fry the second night than the first.

So amino acids like the HUFA's in my selcon? Or is it something else entirely?

Will fish I catch work for this application? should I go for dark or white?
I can get mullet all day long here.

Tommy

From what I have read it is the guts of the fish and shell fish that contain most of the nutrients you are looking for. Most of the nutrition being in the livers.
