Pop Eye - New Coral Beauty Angel

I got a Coral Beauty Angel last week from Rob which was healthy...from someone else's tank that they had taken down. He must have scratched his eye on the rock or something .... because he has pop eye on one side. He is also jerking sideways a bit.

He is still eating..and I just turned the lights off so he will get some rest.

Anything else I can do to help him out? If he doesn't get better ... maybe I can try to catch him to bring him up to Rob's for quarantine...but it's always hard to catch em in there w/ the live rock...so I thought I'd see if there was anything else anyone could recommend?

Yeah I looked there...they mostly said to dose the tank w/ antibiotics...I'll have to call Rob tomorrow and see if I can do that in my tank w/ the other fish...and zoanthids w/out killing anything...

Definately do not dose your tank with any medication. If anything this should serve as a reminder of why a 14 to 21 day quarantine is so important.

He was up at Robs for quite over a week..and was fine. I guessing that when I got him out of the bag, I may have inflicted some sort of injury....although he's been in my tank a week now...and last nite was the first sign of Pop Eye...so it's possible one of the other fish may have roughed him up...not sure....

I don't have a QT tank...when one of my fish are sick or injured..I usually end up spending an hour taking all the LR out of the tank and trying to catch them to bring them up to Rob's for QT... I'm hoping he'll start to show some improvement today....he's still eating... which is good...but if he doesn't show improvement or looks worse by later today...I'll probably end up taking him up to Rob's.

I had the same thing happen to my purple cap basslet a few months ago. From what I have read, it is most likely a physical injury if only one eye is affected. Melafix and consistent high water quality was the recommended solution. It worked for me within a week. I have treated a few times with Melafix and never seen any harmful consequences to any other tank inhabitants.

Are you recommending adding melafix to a reef? From what I understand it is mostly hydogen peroxide, don't know if I would want that on my corals.

I just have zoanthids in that tank... but if I remember correctly...I used melafix (mostly melaluca sp?) in my 65 gallon when I was first starting out (3 mos. after setup)...to try and get rid of some ich...didn't harm the corals at all... course it didn't cure the ich ( I did get some stuff at that time called Kick Ich from Rob that kicked it's but ).

No. As I stated, it was recommended to me. I used it and it worked, mulitple times even. Just stating what I did; no opinion or recommendation as I am by no means a "reef expert."

Whatever you do dont use Rally it is not reef safe like it says. I am still dealing with several corals being bleached and I have lost a few because of it. It makes your water very yellow/green to the point the lights dont penetrate (I am guessing) during the treatment period. I lost the fish I was trying to save too :(
If it is just one eye than it probably hit a rock or scratched it on the net somehow, I would just watch it for a few days to see if it gets better on it's own. I have been told stress can cause that to happen .

Well..I'm not 100% positive...but I'm thinking the Angel must have been getting too close to my maroon clownfish....and got in a fight with them. I'm thinking this...because one of my clownfish are now MIA. I have a small long tent. anemone for them....

I guess it wasn't big enough to provide protection for both of them :( they were the first fish I put in there..and had been growing nicely...however the anemone hasn't really grown. I hope she pops up soon....but if not...I'll have to assume that she got in a fight with the angel and didn't win ... the other clown is now hanging out in the anemone..and seems to go look for her every once in a while :(

Melafix is a Tea Tree extract. It is reef safe. It will help to clear up your eye.

Benni,
14 to 21 day QT doesn't prevent a fish from bumping his eye.

Then where did the pathogen come from? Duh, it came from somewhere (your tanks) or are you trying to tell me the old LFS fib about endemic fungus, bacteria, and protozoans?

Pathogen? I'm pretty sure he got into a fight with the clown fish and that caused the pop eye...and thats why one of them is MIA ( I'm assuming the clean up crew got him before I did )

Pathogens like bacteria and fungus cause popeye. Where did they come from? Almost all of the time they come from holding either in transhipping or at the LFS. A scratch does not get infected without pathogens to infect it.

I had a clown with popeye a few months ago, used melafix in my full on reef and it cleared his eye in about 5-7 days, cant remember how long and did not affect any other fish or any of my sensative corals. I would recommend Melafix to anyone. I hear it cures laterral line to some extend.

I have used it with success for lateral line on my purple tang, also.

I am also wondering if fish are any different than humans. I know if a human gets punched in the eye, it will swell, regardless of how clean the air is or how many times the guy washed his hand before he hit you. Would a fish react the same?

Yes it is possible for a fish to get popeye by hitting an object on the tank. I read several threads about this. I will try to pull them up.

Infection causing bacteria are everywhere. Are you trying to say that there are no harmful bacteria in your tanks, on your hands, on your kitchen counter? We're not talking about specific protozoans, like C. irritans.
