I've kept several, there are at least 2 sp called pop eye catalufa, one from deep water atlantic and one from the pacific. I often find the atlantic one in 100 ft or a little less in the spring as small juv. They do well, but have a big mouth and eat sm fish and shrimp if they can catch them. Being nocternal they tend to hover around in a cave during light hours, but soon learn to take food. The pacific one comes as far north as southern CA and Catalina island and likes cooler water. I've collected them in shallow cooler water on the pacific coast of mexico in the 80's and again it did well in my tank, but back then I had a cool water tank and didn't heat the water so I'm not sure if the pacific one would do well in trop temps.
Good luck with one, very interesting and cool fish
