I read somewhere that popeye is caused by a kidney infection on a fish...treat with EM and it should clear up...
can anyone chime in on this???

Yes, popeye is a symptom of kidney failure most commonly caused by bacterial infection. However, as I understand it, popeye can also indicate an infection in the eye itself, generally after injury to the eye. It is commonly treated with erythromycin, and provided the bacteria causing the infection is susceptible and you begin treatment early enough, it is effective.

or a fluke invades the eye cavity ...and then the fish is "toast"
causes a similar condition to popeye and is impossible to treat..

I have never seen that, only external flukes attached to the outside of the eye. Luckily for me, and the fish :D, that is treatable.

If you have sudden onset of popeye in one or both eyes of a fish, you should look towards supersaturation or mechanical trauma as the cause. This is by far the most common cause. Aside from re-pressurization in a tank, there is no treatment, although many cases resolve on their own.

Slow onset, mild popeye with no other symptoms may be a sign of Mycobacrteriosis.

Mild popeye, slow or quick onset, with edema of other tissues usually means the kidney is involved.

Jay: I got that info after talking to the Dr at nat'l fish pharm...the popeye came after a stubborn persistent case of flukes could not be cured with praziquantel ....14 days erythromicin did nothing...to help the bulged eye
so he suggested the flukes may have gotten INTO the eye which cannot be treated...
