Popeyes and Epsom Salt?

I got an angelfish in a QT tank that I noticed that gotten a pop eye in one of the eyes this evening. I dosed the tank with Epsom salt at a rate of 1 tbsp. per 5 gal. Do I need to put more in later or just leave it at that dosage? I plan on doing a 10 percent water change this weekend and will add to what I change out.

You can do a second dose in a few days. But if you don't see any improvement after that, then you might want to think about antibiotics.

What is magnesium sulfate supposed to do for popeye? I've only ever heard of it recommended for constipated fish.

Its used for minor swelling on people and animals also.

I've had some success feeding peeled boiled peas to relieve constipation. I think it's the fiber in the peas.

I have been shopping around for antibiotics for my angel in case I need it for her popeye. I have read where most people's are using Mardel Maracyn and Maracyn 2 together. I also see you can get Mardel Maracyn-Plus and wondering if this medication work as well or not? The medications in the Maracyn Plus is completely different then the Maracyn and Maracyn-2.

I have no experience using Maracyn Plus (big fan of Maracyn 1 & 2 though). However, I'm starting to believe that antibiotics are antibiotics. As long as you are using a wide spectrum antibiotic that treats both gram positive & negative infections, then it has a reasonable chance of working. It all comes down to whether the fish is being afflicted by something bacterial/fungal in nature (which is almost impossible to know for sure without a culture sample), and whether or not the fish can handle the antibiotics being administered. Which IME, the active ingredients found in Maracyn 1 & 2 have proven to be the gentlest... but also sometimes the most slow-acting. Furan-2 seems to work a bit faster, but also doesn't seem as gentle. So it's pros & cons.

Increasing aeration during antibiotic treatment, and dealing with a gram positive (vs. a gram negative) infection also seems to increase the likelihood of success (IME).

I will be using Furnan-2 because of the vendor I ordered from had it in the small pack as the Maracyn and Maracyn 2 was only available in a large pack which I didn't need. I will give my angel another week to see how she does, by then the furnan willbe here.
